Growth by design. Not by chance.

Build a business
that spreads.

Great products don’t spread on their own. Explore the product and distribution mechanics that turn one customer into the next.

What to expect

Mechanics over buzzwords

Real examples, not invented results

No promises of overnight growth

01 / The growth map

Two sides. One engine.

Make something worth returning to. Then make it easy to bring someone along. Open a mechanic to go deeper.

The product side

Give people a reason to stay.
Sharing starts with value. A referral can bring someone in; a useful product gives them a reason to keep going.
01 — Deliver the first win

Identify the moment a new customer understands the value. Remove unnecessary steps between signing up and reaching that moment.

02 — Build a reason to return

Connect repeat use to a genuine benefit. Duolingo’s streaks illustrate how visible progress can encourage a learning habit.

03 — Make value shareable

Look for outputs, milestones, or collaborative moments people naturally want to share. Let sharing serve the user, not just your acquisition goals.

The distribution side

Give value a way out.

Turn everyday use into an introduction to the next customer.

04 — Align the incentive

Dropbox rewarded invitations with extra storage. The reward reinforced the product’s value instead of introducing an unrelated prize.

05 — Embed the invitation

Hotmail put a signup invitation in email signatures. Distribution traveled with an action customers already performed.

06 — Close the loop

Track whether invitations become active customers who invite others. Reach alone is not a self-sustaining growth loop.

The viral coefficient

K > 1

One customer brings in more than one.

K = invitations per customer × the share of invitations that convert. Above 1, the loop can grow on its own. Retention and the time between invitations still matter.

For instance: 5 invitations × 25% conversion = 1.25 new customers.
